Health Care Costs to Top $8,000 Per Person

Tonight, President Obama is expected to call for a health care reform in a joint session of Congress. In an AP story from yesterday, health care costs will top $8,000 per person this year, consuming an ever-bigger slice of a shrinking economic pie, according to a Department of Health and Human Services report due out today. The government statisticians estimated that health costs will reach $13,100 per person in 2018, accounting for $1 out of every $5 spent in the economy.

Toyota Recalls Over 130,000 Yaris'

Average home heating costs are higher than average this year: $971 for this winter season compared to $807 average for 2002-2007. Because of the increase in home energy costs, more and more people are turning to government assistance to heat their homes. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) had a record number of applicants and is expected to reach approximately 7.3 million households--800,000 more than the record set in 1985.

Nissan Recalls Over 240,000 SUVs

Nissan is recalling over 240,000 2005-2008 Pathfinders, Frontiers and Xterra SUVs for malfunctioning frontal airbags. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains that any of these vehicles originally sold or currently registered in cold winter weather states are at risk of airbag failure due to exposure to high amounts of road salt.

NU Online News Service: According to Munich Re, 2008 was the third most expensive year for insurers on record in terms of catastrophes. The Munich, Germany-based reinsurance carrier said a large number of tropical cyclones and the earthquake in Sichuan, China, made the year one of the most devastating on record. A study released earlier this month by University of Utah psychologists has shown that drivers are much more distracted by talking on a cell phone than by talking with passengers. Frank Drews, David Strayer and Monisha Pasupathi found that when drivers talk on a cell phone, even hands-free cell phones, they drift out of their lanes and miss exits more frequently than drivers talking with a passenger.

Venice Sees Highest Flood Waters in 20 Years

The City of Water, Venice, Italy, is seeing its highest flood waters in over 20 years. The so called 'acqua alta' (high water) reached 5 feet above normal this weekend. Nearly all of Venice has been flooded, including popular tourist spots such as the famous Piazza San Marco. The city's mayor, Massimo Cacciari, has warned tourists not to come to Venice, and has warned residents to stay in their homes.

Oil prices hit a 20-month low this week. As of Wednesday, crude oil prices were just under $56 a barrel, down 60% from its summer peak. According to FuelEconomy.gov, the national average for a gallon of gas is $2.22.

Motorcycles equipped with antilock brakes are 38 percent less likely to be involved in a fatal auto accident, according to a report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The study also found that antilock brakes (commonly referred to as ABS) reduced motorcycle insurance losses by 21 percent.

It looks like the real life of Captain Jack Sparrow isn't quite as glamorous as we may have thought. Real life pirates have increased their activity in the Gulf of Aden, the ocean between Somalia and Yemen, causing the costs to insure shipping and goods to increase. Highlighting this increase in activity, a ship carrying 33 Russian tanks and ammunition was seized by pirates last week. The pirates are demanding a $20 million ransom for the cargo and crew--even with the destroyer USS Howard, a U.S. submarine and various other naval vessels, and the Russian warship Neustrashimy (Intreped) anchored nearby.

$85 Billion Government Loan Staves Off AIG Bankruptcy

The Federal Reserve Bank announced on Tuesday an $85 billion loan to protect American Insurance Group Inc from financial collapse.
In exchange for an 80% stake in the insurance giant, the loan will stave off the biggest corporate bankruptcy in history. Experts predict AIG's failure would have thrown global financial markets into turmoil.

Hurricane Gustav Threatens Gulf Coast, Causes Higher Gas Prices

On the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the Gulf Coast region is gearing up for Hurricane Gustav. The National Hurricane Center says that this storm is expected to become a "major hurricane." At 2:00pm EST today, then tropical storm Gustav had sustained winds of 70 mph with gusts even higher. Predictions show Gustav making landfall around 8 am Tuesday, Sept. 2nd in Louisiana, though it could hit anywhere from the Florida panhandle to eastern Texas. These predictions led to a rise in the price of crude oil, which translates into higher gas prices at the pumps.
