In Ohio and Illinois, officials want red-light cameras to do more than just catch speeders--they want them to verify car insurance, too.

Both states are considering a program that would allow red-light cameras to check passing vehicles for proof of car insurance.

After photographing a passing vehicle's license plate, the plate number would be run through several insurance databases to verify car insurance. When the system identifies an uninsured motorist, a letter would be mailed to the driver informing him that he must purchase car insurance. If he doesn't, he'll be slapped with a hefty fine.

Officials in Chicago believe the program could generate $200 million in revenue for the city.
