Ways to Cut the Heat in the Dog Days of Summer
|
This time of year, from early July to mid-August, is called the Dog Days of Summer. And boy does that describe it! If you're suffering from extended periods of heat and the sound of your air conditioner is constant, here are a couple of quick ways to cut the heat, and maybe save a bit on your cooling bill.
Turn off lights when not needed--all lights produce heat, even if it's just a little bit. You will not only cut back on the amount of heat in your home, but the amount of energy use as well.
Close the curtains--turn your home into a cool oasis by closing up the curtains in the hottest parts of the day.
Wash clothes in the evening--wait until after the sun goes down to do laundry, and you might try line-drying some clothes to reduce your dryer use.
Programmable thermostat--you could save 5-30% on your cooling bill with a programmable thermostat. For the summer, keep the temps around 75 degrees when you are home, and 80 degrees when you are gone.
Fans--use fans to circulate the air in your home and then turn up the air conditioner 2 degrees and save as much as 14%!

If all else fails, fill up a kiddie pool, slather on the sunscreen, grab some lemonade and enjoy the Summer!
