They Melt in Your Mouth, Not in Your Hand and now Could Help Heal Spinal Injuries?
|
You know the saying "they melt in your mouth and not in your hands" is the catch phrase of M&Ms. The chocolate covered middle surrounded by that thin candy shell is one of my favorite candies to snack on, as well as an awesome ice cream topper. But according to recent research, the blue M&Ms could help you heal after a spinal injury.
Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that when they injected the compound Brilliant Blue G (BBG) into rats suffering spinal cord injuries, the rodents were able to walk again, albeit with a limp. The study didn't say if the treatment would have been just as successful if the rats were fed the blue M&Ms instead of getting an injection.
Lead researcher Maiken Nedergaard told CNN that there is currently no standard treatment for patients with spinal injury when they reach the hospital emergency room. Nedergaard also said that the BBG injection won't cure spinal injuries, but instead offers the potential to gain some mobility back.
Pretty amazing to think that dye in those little blue candies could help heal such extreme trauma. But this also got me thinking...what do the red ones do?
