Road Trip and Driving Songs
|
With people pinching pennies and gas prices much better compared to last year, it looks like more people may be hitting the road for vacations this summer. And isn't it pretty much a requirement that a special mixed CD or iPod playlist be brought along for the drive? There are just some songs that demand we be behind the wheel, windows down, wind blowing, and cruisin'. Here's a great group of driving songs for your next road trip.
My Road Trip Playlist
Life is a Highway by Rascal Flatts--This song evokes images of long winding highways and is the perfect road trip anthem, especially if you've seen the movie Cars.

Sausalito Summernight by Diesel--As a native of Northern California, I love the San Francisco Bay Area destination of this one. Plus, anyone who has driven a junker knows how nerve-wracking it can be to take it on a long drive.
Pacific Coast Party by Smash Mouth--I played this one on a road trip along the Pacific Coast with my boyfriend, Walt. We had a great vacation, hitting Pismo Beach, San Simeon and Santa Cruz. The rhythm really reminds me of curvy Highway 1.
Mustang Sally by The Commitments--It has a great rhythm that is perfect for rolling down the window and just cruisin'. Makes me wish I had a Mustang.
Going the Distance by Cake--If you're a NASCAR fan like me (go 24!), then this song definitely makes your foot hit the floor.
Runnin' Down a Dream by Tom Petty--This song is great because it is about travel and not really knowing what the destination is, that the trip is what's important.
Rockin' Down the Highway by The Doobie Brothers--A song that captures the essence of driving the open highway. "Gotta keep movin' or I'll loose my mind!"--a perfect truth of the open road.

Lodi by Credence Clearwater Revival--So Walt and I got very lost once on a road trip and ended up stuck in Lodi, and let me tell you, CCR had it right. No offence to the residents of Lodi but we now keep a road map in the glove box.
Route 66 by John Mayer or the Rolling Stones (originally by Nat King Cole)--The epitome of songs about traveling the great American highways. It has been done and re-done many times over the years because it is just plain fun.
Roadhouse Rap/ Roadhouse Blues by The Doors (featuring John Lee Hooker)--This song is my ultimate driving song. Listen to Jim Morrison's description of driving in a '57 Chevy to an old roadhouse and you will love it. I suggest playing this one loudly on a warm summer night with the windows down, cruising a back road for its full effect. "Let it Roll, Baby, Roll."
