Here's how to prepare Dad's 3-part roadside emergency kit:

When Dad's tire goes flat, or his battery dies, he'll be prepared for basic repairs with the following items:

• Tire repair kit, pressure gage, jack and tire pump

• Flares or emergency triangle

• Tow rope

• Extra oil

• Antifreeze

• Windshield wiper fluid

• Jumper cables

• Tools (lug wrench, hammer, standard and Phillips screwdrivers, adjustable wrench

Sometimes it isn't just a flat tire. Dad could get stuck in the mud or there could be a natural disaster. So in addition to the basic car repair kit, give Dad an emergency kit so he can easily deal with stressful events:

• Fire extinguisher (5 lb., A-B-C type)

• Flashlight and extra batteries

• Battery-powered AM/FM radio and extra batteries

• Compass and road maps

• Shovel

• Sack of sand or cat litter (for tire traction)

• Bottled water

• Non-perishable high-energy foods, such as granola bars, raisins or peanut butter

• Extra clothing to keep dry

• Blankets or sleeping bags

Dad may shake it off when he hit's his thumb with a hammer, but he should still have a first aid kit. The Red Cross recommends the following items be kept in first aid kits:

• (20) Adhesive bandages, various sizes

• (1) 5" x 9" sterile dressing

• (1) Conforming roller gauze bandage

• (2) Triangular bandages

• (2) 3 x 3 sterile gauze pads

• (2) 4 x 4 sterile gauze pads

• (1) Roll 3" cohesive bandage

• (2) Germicidal hand wipes or waterless alcohol-based hand sanitizer

• (6) Antiseptic wipes

• (2) Pair large medical grade non-latex gloves

• Adhesive tape, 2" width

• Anti-bacterial ointment

• Cold pack

• Scissors (small, personal)

• Tweezers

• CPR breathing barrier, such as a face shield
