The Octuplet Mom and the Monumental Cost of Motherhood

February 17, 2009 | By: Robert | Comments ( 1 ) | Posted in: Health

Late last month, a California woman gave birth to a set of octuplets--six boys and two girls. Doctors at the Kaiser Permanente hospital in Bellflower, California initially expected only seven children, and were surprised to find an eighth in the bunch--"Baby H."

Three of the octuplets needed breathing assistance, but none have serious medical problems. The octuplets could be in incubators for six to eight weeks and may remain in the hospital for about 10 weeks. It is the second-known case of octuplets in the United States.

Motherhood should never be measured in dollars and cents, but how about the cost of having eight babies born prematurely?

According to the U.S. Department for Health and Human Services, the cost of a hospital stay for a premature baby in California is roughly $160,000. Multiply that number by eight and it reaches a staggering $1.3 million. Here's hoping she has an excellent health insurance policy...

The octuplet mother, who had six children previously, now has 14 children to feed. But the financial damage doesn't end there. According to an article by The Associated Press, the average cost of raising 14 children from birth to adulthood can range from $1.3 all the way to $2.7 million. To cover that monumental tab, she'll have to win the California Lottery jackpot--twice.

If you thought the new Friday the 13th film was frightening, imagine the poor woman's weekly diaper bill.

Maybe someone should create a "Young-Life Insurance" policy - which you can only start when you are young and single - to cover the cost of raising children - in the eventuality that you should ever have children in your future...
