New Teen Auto Safety Program Uses "How's My TEEN Driving?" Bumper Sticker

Steer Straight, an automotive advocacy group based in Boston, Mass., has launched an innovative teen driver safety program that uses a "How's My TEEN Driving?" bumper sticker to allow motorists to phone-in comments about the teen's driving habits.

Calls are directed to a 24/7 live customer service representative. Within 15 minutes, an incident report is created and forwarded to an email address provided by the teen's parents. The email highlights the teen's driving issue(s) and provides a link to an online training program that outlines safe driving techniques.

Steer Straight stresses that no contact is made with the teen, law enforcement or car insurance companies.

In the commercial trucking industry, where the "How's My Driving?" model originated, bumper stickers have been shown to reduce the frequency of incidents by 35%.

Providing a phone number for motorists to dial may exacerbate the risk of drivers using cell phones while driving, but improved teen safety may be worth the risk.

Young drivers are involved in roughly 18% of all automobile crashes, and nearly 10,000 teens die in accidents every year.
