Internet Doctors - Not as Crazy as it Sounds
|
We all know the process of trying to get in to see your doctor - calling to make an appointment, taking time off work to go there and the inevitable down time in the waiting room watching the fish swim around the fish tank. But the Internet is changing the way people can receive medical help.
For some in select areas of New York, you can have a doctor examine you over the Internet. Through a company called hellohealth.com, people can chat with doctors via email, instant messaging sessions or by online video. The only problem with hellohealth.com is that it doesn't accept health insurance, so any questions you have or any appointments you set, New Yorker's have to pay out of pocket for.
In Hawaii, a company called American Well also connects patients to doctors online. American Well patients can communicate with doctors 24 hours a day online, by phone, text or IM. American Well accepts Blue Cross/Blue Shield and charges members $10 for five minutes and non-members $45.
There are also ask-a-doctor websites like justanswer.com and askadoctor.com which charge $15.95 for an answer. Are you a Twitterer? Probably so; even InsWeb Twitters. Your doctor might be too. Some doctors are using Twitter to connect with other doctors about tough cases. Not sure if you will be able to follow your doctor and bug them every time you cough or sneeze, but at least your doctor can talk to other doctors if they are stumped.
The Internet is definitely changing our lives - from ordering your groceries online to comparing insurance quotes to now being able to get medical advice. While I am sure there are still plenty of conditions you need to see your doctor face to face to figure out what's wrong, it is nice to think that if you have a quick question, you could text your doctor instead of having to set up an appointment.
