Cops Going Green?

January 22, 2009 | By: Matt | Comments ( 0 ) | Posted in: Offbeat

It's kind of iconic to see a Ford Crown Victoria with a rack of red and blue lights on top of it. However, it seems like law enforcement agencies are also looking for ways to cut back on the fuel bill. While many people started to save fuel by carpooling or by biking/walking, police departments can't necessarily implement these options. A possible solution - hybrid police cruisers.

The police chief in Cahokia, Il plans on trying out the Pontiac Vibe GT. While this isn't a hybrid vehicle, the four-cylinder car is expected to get twice the gas mileage.

In Gulf Breeze, Fl the police chief there is trying to get a state grant to replace the combustion engines in three of the Crown Victoria's with electric engines.

In Salt Lake City, Ut the police department there has added five 2009 Toyota Camry hybrids to their fleet.

It will be interesting to see if the hybrids will work out as police cars. Maybe we will see the new episodes of "Wildest Police Chases" with a Toyota Camry police car chasing a fugitive in a Prius?
