Are You a Smoker?

January 12, 2009 | By: Matt | Comments ( 1 ) | Posted in: Life

When looking for term life insurance or health insurance, one of the first health questions you will be asked is if you are a smoker. While this may seem like a cut and dry answer, it is actually confusing if you're like me and occasionally smokes a cigar. And where does smoking a pipe fit in as well? Not as clear cut a question anymore is it?

The best answer is to ask your term life insurance provider what their criteria is for being a non-smoker. Many term life insurance companies have stipulations that a person can still qualify for non-smoker rates if they limit themselves to 12 cigars a year. Other companies are stricter and have a zero tolerance policy for nicotine.

The same advice goes for those of you who enjoy a pipe while reading your favorite financial publications. Depending on the frequency which you smoke, your term life insurance provider might still offer you non-smoker rates.

The obvious exception is if you're a person who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day. It is safe to say that you are a smoker. Maybe you think that if you tell your life insurance company you aren't a smoker, you could get non-smoker rates; however, part of the medical exam you need to pass before your policy goes into force will determine the amount of nicotine in your system.

If you are a cigar aficionado or a pipe lover and are looking for life insurance, you should ask perspective term life insurance companies these questions. While one company might offer someone who likes cigars non-smoker rates, another could charge them the same rates as a person who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day!
