Future Cars
|
What will the future hold for automobiles? Will they ever break the bond of gravity so we can fly around like the Jetsons? Or will they stay grounded? Maybe they will be so sophisticated they drive themselves and we get chauffeured around? Until that day comes, automakers are using technology to help drivers avoid accidents.
Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Braking
The most deadly accidents are frontal collisions. Forward collision warning technology will detect, usually by radar, when the driver is headed for trouble. With some forward collision warnings the driver isn't only alerted to dangers, but some will even apply the brakes for you. This technology is being introduced by Acura, Mercedes, and Volvo.
Lane Departure Warning
The number of drivers out on the road that are driving while drowsy is mind boggling; especially when you consider that driving while drowsy is just as bad, if not worse, than driving while intoxicated. The lane departure warning system is designed to alert drivers who drift from their lane into another lane. Carmakers Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Infiniti, and Volvo offer lane departure warning systems in their cars.
Blind Spot Detection
Blind spots are a big problem for a driver. Side and rearview mirrors help drivers spot other cars behind them but sometimes another car is hiding in their blind spot. The blind spot detection system will alert drivers by some sort of lighted display that a vehicle is in their blind spot. Audi, Buick, Cadillac, Mazda, Mercedes, and Volvo offer blind spot detection systems.
Adaptive Headlights
Adaptive headlights are designed to help drivers see what is around the bend in the road. The idea behind this concept was that drivers will be able to see possible hazards sooner, giving them time to avoid accidents. Adaptive headlights are offered by Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Maserati, Mercedes, Porsche, Volkswagen, and Volvo.
While the future of some automakers hangs in the balance, it's comforting to know that technology is being developed to keep drivers safe by avoiding accidents. Who knows, maybe the flying car is just around the corner.
